The Character Education Department is a component of the Arizona Department of Education that focuses on instilling character and values in the students of Arizona’s 237 school districts and 422 charter schools. Character education encompasses all aspects of the influence that families, schools, and other social institutions have on the positive character development of children and adults. It is a learning process that enables students and adults in a school community to understand, care about and act on core ethical values such as respect, compassion, initiative, citizenship, and responsibility for self and others. Upon such core values, we form the attitudes and actions that are the hallmark of safe, healthy and informed communities that serve as the foundation of our society. The Arizona Character Education Matching Grant Program was created to offer schools the opportunity to secure the services of a third-party vendor to provide character education curriculum to their students. This competitive grant matches funds that are secured by outside sources, up to $10,000. We will begin accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year for both providers and schools in late Spring 2014. The Character Education Matching Grant is a competitive grant. Therefore, not every school receives the grant. In order to service those who do not receive the grant for the applicable school year, the Character Education team has compiled an outline of curriculum that can be used by any school that wishes to administer character education programs in their classrooms. These outlines are not binding. Rather, they are malleable, and can be tailored to meet the social and emotional needs of the students of that particular school.  This outline consists of a brief definition and explanation of the seventeen character education attributes, selected readings, and a diverse and inclusive list of Americans who have exhibited attributes relative to character. The vision and mission of the Arizona Department of Education Character Education Program is to inspire and support educators, parents, and community members to touch the lives of youth by instilling in them the traits of positive character.
