Words seem inadequate in expressing my own profound respect and pride in this accomplishment, against challenging odds, that we as a group of dedicated partners were faced with and overcame!
From the generosity of our U-Team Facilitators; Brother Ghazi Muhammad (Your Path is Unique), Terry Clark (Tomorrows’ Leaders), Hank Wilson (Hanlea Inc.), Billy Ramsey (Black Poet Ventures), and Coach Sebastian Payton (Up On Game), to our wonderfully resourceful ‘Talking Drum’ speakers; Oye Waddell (Hustle PHX), Gerald Richards (Former Assistant to Phoenix Police Chief), Stacia Holmes (Coordinator of Deer Valley Community Center), Carol Hobbs (Pima Prevention Partners) and Frank Crump (Founder / President of UPI Education) the young Cadets were certainly imbued with exceptional intelligence, passion and insight regarding the 10 Universal Laws of Successful Achievement!
I would be remiss, if I didn’t offer honorable mention to my own City of Phoenix, Brave Team of Michelle Jaime and Oscar Adame’; both of whom on behalf of the Cadets hosted transportation to and from Harmon Park Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays, secured the daily breakfast and lunch meals and provided tutoring. Add to this, the awesome support of the South Phoenix City District under the leadership of John Mason, Recreation Coordinator, who made possible the South Phoenix Youth Center for the entire 8 week program; while keeping our Cadets hydrated with gallons of water and rewarding them with an expense paid field trip to ‘The Main Event’ where the cadets had a ton of truly unforgettable fun!
A special shout out to our UPI board of advisor, representing the Arizona affiliate of the Tri-Caucus, Harry Garewal for his very enlightening presentation on the subject of leadership. A big thank you to Brother Ghazi, as he touched the hearts of everyone with his personal story of incarceration as a teen; and to UPI board of advisor, Tiffany Litherland, Founder, EvolYOUtions, for her dedicated role as UPI’s Social Enterprise Leader.
On behalf of the UPI Management Team and UPI Founder, Frank Crump – we extend our deepest appreciation to the brilliance of our Master of Ceremony, Arizona State University Associate Dean of Students, Alonzo Jones, whose message to the young cadets should be heard by every teenager in America.
And then there was our ubiquitous 21st century keynote speaker, Reverend Jarrett Maupin, who perfectly hit on the theme of The Law of Servant Leadership. Conclusively, we appreciate Maricopa Community College and Rio Salado College for their second year of venue support. Likewise, thanks to Betty Ambrose, Loretta Cantley and Brother Abdu Dandridge whose, Summer Teen Leadership Journal, Photos and Video Documentary respectively, will make the Summer Camp and Graduation Ceremony an unforgettable experience for us all.
Next summer, we plan to hold a Life Skills Solutions™ / Leadership Camp for Male and Female Teens of Color.
